Fucking chainsaws on a stick!
Look, it’s a new trailer for DEAD RISING 2, with full info (release dates, etc) coming at 4PM BST today. We’re excited.
RAM Raider calls it a day
Editor sphincters loosen as our good chum RAM Raider calls it a day on his anonymous games industry-whinge blog, prompting us to get our arses in gear. After we’ve had a good cry about the departure of our favourite anonymous blogger, we promise we’ll be returning to regular programming with plenty of reviews and stuff. We promise.
Stuart Campbell: Now Playing Scotland Yard
This month I’ve mostly been playing Scotland Yard, because I don’t have any brothers or sisters.
(I tried really hard to play a non-DS game the most this month, honestly I did, but the fact is there’s almost nothing out there worth a damn on other formats. I had a good stab at the excellent Super Stardust PSP and at the same machine’s less-excellent-but-interesting Everyday Shooter, as well as playing GTI Club+ and Wipeout HD, but they just couldn’t compete with the DS for sheer braintime.)
Snappy Gamer Annual Roundup
Hello there, we hope you had a great Christmas (we did, hence the complete lack of updates) and we pre-emptively wish you a happy new year (unless you’re in Australia and various other timezones, in which case, happy new year). We haven’t been around long so there isn’t much to round up, but the tail end of this year has certainly been fun. Thanks very much to all of the people who have said nice things about Snappy Gamer, bookmarked us, subscribed to the RSS feed, etc. And thanks to the people who’ve name-called us as well. It’s all good fun.
Coming in the first week or so of the new year expect regular service to continue with the long-promised GAME OF THE YEAR malarky sure to show up soon, as well as a new column from Rev. Stuart Campbell, Laird Of Glencairn, and some reviews.
Happy new year!
Virtual Fireplace for Xbox 360
Someone has created a festive Virtual Fireplace for Xbox 360 using the XNA Creator Tools, finally putting them to good use. The fireplace will sit there roaring away with authentic sound effects and everything, so get yourself in the Christmas spirit by turning that massive telly into a log fire for just 400 points. Hang on, 400 points? Fuck off.
Powerup Forever Review (Xbox 360)
Most other reviewers: “Twin stick shooters, Geometry Wars, Powerup Forever, cashing in”. Bollocks. The reason so many developers are making twin stick shooters is because they’re wonderfully simple to control. Powerup Forever is no different. ‘Borrowing’ a few ideas from the PS3’s very average flOw, your ship grows as you progress, with all of the stages blending seamlessly together, gradually becoming more difficult as you have to contend with the larger enemies.
OutRun Online Arcade coming early 2009
In what is possibly the most exciting announcement of the year, SEGA has confirmed that Sumo Digital is indeed working on a high definition OutRun port for PSN and Xbox Live Arcade. OutRun Online Arcade will arrive in early 2009. We’d say more but we’re too excited. Just look at the screenshots on SEGA’s Flickr account and read the press release below. There’s also a trailer on SEGA’s YouTube page. Objective journalism? Fuck that. Wahoo!
GTI Club+ Review (PS3)
13 reasons why GTI Club+ is better than Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
1. GTI Club+ is actually really bloody fun. You start the game up, pick a car, pick a track and you’re racing frantically within a minute.
2. You don’t have to um and ah over a number of extremely dull tracks modelled on extremely dull real life places. You have to settle for the gorgeous and exciting Cote D’Azur every time. The only thing you have to decide is how difficult to make it for yourself.
Space Giraffe now available on PC
For those of you who don’t have access to an Xbox 360 and therefore have the only valid excuse for not owning Space Giraffe yet, Llamasoft has finally released the PC version. You can find more info and download a demo over on the Llamasoft website. The PC version features 100 new levels over the 360 version, and we’ll be sure to try to get up to at least level 20 before we write our review.
You can buy it here for $20 US.
Lots of Tracks
I’ve been playing GTI Club+ a lot over the last couple of weeks and it has got me thinking about racing games and your typical gamer’s perception of “value for money”. GTI Club+ has just one stage with three track variations (easy, medium and hard). A lot of the reviews I’ve read have marked this down as a negative point on a racer that is otherwise excellent. Now, I’m not going to deny that I wouldn’t like more tracks as well, but that’s purely because I’ve had so much fun with the ones already included – as much fun as I’ve had with any other racer ever, in fact.
